Simran Shah Commission

Gold Line Genesis Commissioning Project

Gold Line Genesis is an ambitious project bringing a bold, new voice to the saxophone quartet repertoire, featuring a multi-movement work by acclaimed composer Simran Shah.

The Vision

The Gold Line Quartet balances technical precision with deep emotional resonance. Our foundation is built on masterpieces like Ravel’s Le Tombeau de Couperin and the emotional depth of Joel Love’s In Memoriam.

In Simran Shah, we have found a composer who perfectly mirrors this philosophy. Her aesthetic is rooted in Western Fine Art and Romanticism, yet informed by her work in Cannes-recognized film scoring and South Asian traditions.

“New commission alert! 🎷✨ I am so incredibly excited to be working with the Gold Line Quartet on a new multi-movement work for 2027.

If you know me, you know that Western fine art and Romantic-period aesthetics are basically my entire personality, so getting to dive into the ‘lyrical soul’ of the saxophone quartet feels like such a natural fit. Lately, I’ve been obsessed with how we can bridge that old-world Romantic elegance with the kind of cinematic, ambient textures I’ve been exploring in my film work.

I’m drawing so much inspiration from the quartet’s core repertoire—there’s a ‘vocal’ magic in their Hobbits take and Dvorak interpretations that I’m definitely bringing into the writing process. My goal is to create something that feels like a modern painting: structural, emotive, and maybe a little bit dramatic. 🥀🎨

The work will be finished by the end of 2026, and I can’t wait to see it brought to life on stage in LA in 2027! Thank you to the Gold Line team for trusting my voice and for letting me ‘noodle’ with these incredible sounds. Let’s make something beautiful!! 🎶💕”

Risks and Challenges

The primary challenge of any new music project is the sheer amount of “invisible labor”—the hours of score preparation and ensemble rehearsals required to master a brand-new musical language. By funding the commission upfront, you provide the financial stability needed for the composer to deliver a work of the highest caliber and for the quartet to bring it to life with the precision it deserves.

Your support ensures that this collaboration doesn’t just happen once, but results in a professional score that will be shared with the global saxophone community.

Frequently Asked Questions

For Our Patrons & Supporters

What exactly does my donation fund?
100% of the funds raised in this campaign go directly to the Commissioning Fee for Simran Shah. While the Gold Line Quartet is fronting initial costs, your support ensures that the composer is fairly compensated for her labor—a process that involves months of sketching, scoring, and engraving a major multi-movement work.
Can I attend the rehearsals if I choose the $75 tier?
Yes! We will offer both in-person (for those in the LA area) and virtual (via high-quality livestream) access to select rehearsals. You will see the raw, collaborative process between Simran and the quartet as we work through the technical and aesthetic challenges of the new score. We will email you with rehearsal details when it is ready to begin.
Is my contribution tax-deductible?
Gold Line Quartet is currently operating as a professional chamber ensemble. Please check with your tax advisor, as contributions to fundraising campaigns are generally not tax-deductible unless specified via a fiscal advisor.

The Work & The Music

Will the name of the piece be “Genesis”?
Not at all. Gold Line Genesis is the name of our fundraising project, as this effort is an ensemble first. The title of the composition itself will be chosen by Simran Shah as the work nears completion in 2026.
How difficult is the piece?
Simran Shah is a saxophonist herself, so while the music will be virtuosic and challenging, it is being written with an idiomatic understanding of the instrument. It will be suitable for professional ensembles, graduate-level quartets, and advanced undergraduate programs.
What is included in the $40 Performer’s Pre-Order?
You will receive a full digital package including the conductor’s score and individual parts for Soprano, Alto, Tenor, and Baritone saxophone. This is a one-time discount for Kickstarter backers; the retail price will increase to $50 or more after the official release.
When will I receive the music?
Digital access to the score and parts will be provided by October 31, 2027. This allows the Gold Line Quartet to premiere the work and finalize any “performance edits,” ensuring you receive the most polished and accurate version possible.

General Questions

What happens if you exceed your funding goal?
Any “stretch goals” reached beyond the commission fee will be used to fund the Professional Recording and Video Production of the work. This will allow us to create a world-class digital archive and a professional video to help disseminate Simran’s music to an even wider global audience.
How do I provide my name for the patron section when the score gets officially published?
When you contribute, you will be able to specify exactly how you would like your name (or the name of a loved one/organization) to appear in the printed and digital editions of the score.
